Engineering Common Entrance Test for Diploma Holders

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India level examination that tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science. GATE is held by the IISc and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Roorkee) The GATE is used for admissions to various post-graduate programmes (e.g. M.E., M.Tech, and Ph.D.) in Indian higher education institutes.

Eligibility

  • Graduate degree holders in Engineering/ Technology/ Architecture and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Post Graduate degree holders in any branch of Science/ Mathematics/ Statistics/ Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final year of such programs.
  • Candidates in the second or higher year of Four-year integrated Master’s degree programs (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/ Technology.
  • Candidates who are studying in the 4th or higher year of 5-year integrated Master’s degree programs or Dual Degree programs in Engineering/Technology.
  • Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognized by UPSC/AICTE.

Syllabus

The questions in the test paper will test the General Aptitude (Language and Analytical Skills), apart from the core subject of the paper.
XE Paper
  • Section A – Engineering Mathematics (compulsory)
  • GA – General Aptitude (compulsory)
  • Any two of XE sections B to G
The choice of two sections from B to G can be made during the examination after viewing the questions. Candidates can answer only two sections at a time.
XL Paper
  • Section H – Chemistry (compulsory)
  • GA – General Aptitude (compulsory)
  • Any two of XL sections I to M
The choice of two sections from I to M can be made during the examination after viewing the questions.Candidates can answer only two sections at a time.

Pattern

The GATE examination consists of a single paper of 3-hour duration with a total of 65 questions carrying a maximum of 100 marks. There are both multiple choice questions (MCQ) and numerical answer type questions in the test paper.
